Character Checklist Required Recommended Optional
Welcome to the Character Creation Checklist, our extended site guide (the short version can be found here
if you're feeling impatient). This isn't required reading, but may be helpful for newcomers. You may jump to a specific selection using the links below.
Staff are here to help with questions and technical problems (including skin issues). Please reach out to us if you're experiencing any difficulty with this process.
GETTING TO KNOW KALOPSIA
The first thing you're going to want to do is check out the required reading which on Kalopsia is pretty minimal.
If you find all that amiable the next step is registering. Each member on Kalopsia needs an Out-of-Character (OoC) account first. OoC accounts allow you to receive PMs, vote in polls, and helps organize things. You might notice profiles and the miniprofiles on posts are different tailored toward account types to reflect these differences.
You can register your OoC account here; on that page you will encounter a short version of this guide that you can ignore if you intend to read the rest of this. If you agree to the rules and conditions you can proceed to the next page - choose "OoC account" from the options and it should explain itself from there. Please make sure your name is distinct from your character's name and identical to the name you use in the chat.
Once you are registered you will be linked to the shop - buy the correct usergroup (the OoC one) and use it; you are now sorted into a New OoC account and should be able to post around the board.
Tip: If you make a mistake or change your mind you are always free to change your account name.
Once you have an OoC account you have the option to post an introduction which helps us better know you, what makes you feel comfortable and safe while you RP, and what you expect to get out of the site.
Tip: Now that you're registered you can edit skin settings like the site's colour palette / font size / chat settings and more via your profile.
MAKING A CHARACTER
The first thing you need to get started making a character is an idea. We have wanted ads available for members who like to create characters with an in-built plotting hook. In addition to that we also have highly customizable site canons as well as a list of potential jobs and organizations available to Kalopsia residents. If those fail to grab you then you are welcome to pour through our user-submitted lore which while not binding or required reading can be very inspiring!
Tip: We have a list of resources that are just generally handy when making a character, ranging help picking playbys, names and more.
For organizational purposes we require that each character have their own account. The instructions are similar for making an OoC account. You can register your character account here. If you agree to the rules and conditions you can proceed to the next page - choose "IC account" (that is, in-character account) from the options and it should explain itself from there.
Character applications / portfolios are tied to the registration, so you will notice fields that didn't exist for your OoC account (that you can preview). These can be answered briefly or at length in whatever level of mystery you prefer and can be edited later.
Tip: The captcha verification does expire so I recommend completing that portion of the registration last.
Once you have submitted an application you will be given instruction to navigate to the store. Do this and choose the item that represents where your character came from; next use the item. Once this step is complete your character has been sorted and you are welcome to begin posting around the board.
It is required that you post a claim for each character once registered. Take care to read the Face Claim guidelines as some of our rules are unconventional. Our claim also doubles as a "Who's who" list; the fancier names indicate users who have posted intros.
Tip: If you log into your OoC account after making the character there is a simple method for linking accounts that will let you post as your character without ever changing accounts / if you're ever in need of changing accounts it will let you do so in one click.
MAKING A CHARACTER: Extras
If the short application has you craving more log into your character account if you haven't already and navigate to their profile. More optional fields are now available to you, and if you would like another section added reach out to us.
You can also check out our honor-system awards and see if your character pre-qualifies for any awards. In addition to that we also offer optional registrations that will let you officially list your character's current employment or any animals they may have.
Our posting template is automatically generated which means you don't have to worry about adding code to every post. You can add decorative elements as necessary, however, and customize the following elements.
Tip: Staff are always on hand to help you with graphics if needed.
GETTING YOUR NEW CHARACTER OUT THERE
Although optional, posting a plot page is a sure way to get your character integrated into the story of Kalopsia.
Tip: It's also a good idea to get out there and post in other plot pages. Since plot pages are sorted by where a character lives there are in-built plotting opportunities when regarding how your character might interact with their neighbors.
If you're already burning with inspiration then posting an open thread is always an option, as is claiming any open threads that may be available to you.
Tip: Not sure where to post? Our Kalopsia Tourist Guide breaks up locations based on where people eat / shop / nature hang-outs / infrastructure etc. and is a good way to understand the local hot-spots at a glance. Simple maps of the town and the hotel are also available.
Explore the Development boards if you're in need of inspiration.
Check out the Guild Hall to see if there are any character-owned organizations your character would be interested in joining, which would open up new potential plotting with fellow organization members.
And good job making it through this guide. The basics have been covered but for those of you looking to dig deeper here's a few places to start.
The Black Market is a points-based posting shop that allows you to do stuff like purchasing sub-forums for your character's home or business.
Want ads can be posted if you have a specific idea for a character that's not on the board yet or if you want to post an open call for a plot idea.
We offer a list of our host's features we currently make use of if you're having difficulty trying to figure out how to update something.
Off-site Kalopsia features and social media are also available.
CONTENT WARNINGS DEMYSTIFIED
When publishing a thread make use of our one-click categorization system by choosing an appropriate tag when relevant. This helps people screen what they click at a glace if, for example, they're at their place of work.
If you choose a tag that alludes to a content warning you must include one at the top of your post. It can be in any format as long as it's obvious, but the following BBcode is the most convenient / consistently styled.
[cw] list content being warned for, separated by commas, and that's it [/cw]
If your post includes content worthy of a warning, that is not already warned for in the thread intro, add a content warning to your post.
If you're not sure if you should add a warning for something then err on the side of caution. Any content you believe has the potential to viscerally upset another member and the following should always be warned for:
Abuse, Violence / Gore, Death / Murder / Suicide, -phobic / -ism, Violence / Self-Harm, Sexual Content / Dubious and Non-consensual, Drug Use (including pot), Detailed / specific negative manifestations of mental illness etc.
